Vascular Ultrasound Scan

What is vascular ultrasound imaging?

Vascular refers to the blood vessels. Therefore, vascular ultrasound imaging refers to the ultrasound examination of the body’s circulatory system. This uses the doppler phenomenon to study the speed and volume of the blood flow.

The following are examples where this is useful:

Carotid arteries: These are the arteries that supply the blood flow to the brain and if blocked can lead to a Stroke. Doppler can demonstrate whether the carotid arteries are stenosed (narrowed), calcified or have a thrombosis (blood clot).

Aortic Aneurysm: This is a widening of the aorta. This is a potentially fatal condition for which early medical intervention can be life saving.

Thrombosis of veins: These are blood clots which can develop in the body’s venous system and most commonly occur in the deep veins of the calves causing pain and swelling of the calves.

How long is the appointment?

20 minutes is required to complete the examination.

How much does it cost?

A scan of the carotid arteries is £95
A scan of the abdominal aorta is £95
A scan of the deep veins is £95

You would pay £95 for your first package. Any additional packages would cost £40 each.

How should I prepare for the scan?

No preparation is required.

What will happen during the examination?

The examination will be carried out by a qualified Sonographer. The procedure is non-invasive and painless. The Sonographer will move a transducer lubricated with warm gel over the area to be examined. You are welcome to ask questions during your examination.

When do I get the results?

We will send a signed report of our findings to your doctor. You should then arrange an appointment with your GP who will explain our findings to you.

We feel that your doctor is best placed to explain the findings to you because he will have details of blood tests and other investigations that may have been carried out.
